Three Sure-Fire Ways to Teach Your Child About Safety

January 23, 2008

Levels of Safety

By teaching our children there are different levels of safety and those levels depend on the situation they are in and the decisions they make in those situations, we can better train them to use their instincts, intuition, and even fear as safety tools. This is an easy way to explain to our children how to trust these instincts.

"Every time we travel through a busy intersection, there are traffic lights there to tell us if it is safe to pass through. If the light is green, that tells us it is safe to pass, if the light is yellow that means we must use caution and to be careful and to prepare to stop. If the light turns red, that means danger and do not proceed or you may become hurt in an accident.

We can use these same lights, instead of traffic lights, as safety lights, to know when we are safe, to use caution, or to let us know we are in personal danger.

If our safety light is green?.. This means we are safe and everything is normal.

If our safety light turns yellow?..This means that our intuition, instincts, or our gut feeling is telling us something is wrong!

Raising Happy Diabetic Kids Part III Help Your Child Develop Self-Control

January 22, 2008

This is the third and final article in a series I wrote about raising happy diabetic kids. While Juvenile Diabetes makes this job tougher the information in these articles applies to raising any child. Diabetic children aren’t any different from other children. Their pancreas just doesn’t work. However, the emotional toll that diabetes takes on a child, even when blood glucose levels are under fairly good control, must be taken into account whenever we consider what is best for them. We can be very helpful in raising children who are emotionally strong and better able to avoid and overcome these stresses brought on by diabetes by making sure they are raised with a strong foundation of these three basic life skills. Self-Confidence, Self-Reliance, and Self-Control.

It All Starts With Discipline:

In order for our children to develop self-control it is our responsibility to teach them discipline. Discipline is the part of raising our children that causes us the most sleeplessness. It’s probably also the part that a lot of parents don’t think they get quite right. The thoughts of the "experts" have changed so much that the "old fashioned" discipline we were taught and what has become the so-called "permissive" new tradition are so far apart several things generally happen. We ignore what we were taught, or we ignore the new conventional wisdom, or we become confused and don’t carry out our responsibilities properly. I’m as guilty of this confusion from time to time as anybody else is. When you think about it discipline should have three goals.

Choosing the Perfect Jogging Stroller

January 21, 2008

When choosing the perfect jogging stroller, a very important question to ask yourself is whether you want a swivel or fixed wheel. The benefit of choosing a jogging stroller with a fixed wheel is that it will offer the stability and straight tracking that you will require. The front wheel tends to be larger on a fixed wheel model which means it will be a smoother ride for your child and will handle bumps better at any speed.

When shopping for a fixed wheel jogging stroller there are several questions you should be asking yourself. Is this stroller travel friendly? Is it important to you that your jogger stroller has a folding mechanism? Consider whether or not you it is important to you that your jogger stroller also has a bike trailer included for people that cycle. For those of you are that are off-road runners, nature trail enthusiasts or live in a neighborhood with bumpy sidewalks, you should consider purchasing a jogger stroller with sturdy frames, suspension systems and high-quality construction.

The Personality Traits of an Aquarius Baby

January 20, 2008

Your Aquarius Baby..

January 20 - February 18

Your Aquarian baby will be outwardly calm, relaxed and delightful and grandparents in particular will dote on her. Aquarians are quick thinkers who want to analyse everything and everyone. An Aquarian child will often be totally unpredictable and come up with with lots of ideas; and she will also be sensitive and intuitive. You may find your child will rebel against commands and rules, but if you leave her to think things through she will normally come to a sensible conclusion on her own. Young Aquarians like to have many friends, although few will be very close, and will be generous towards them. Parents should watch out for the typical Aquarian absent-mindedness.

An Aquarian child will be constantly on the go and needs plenty of opportunity to make discoveries. Your child will thrive in a peaceful, calm, harmonious environment. These children are sensitive to any underlying tensions. Aquarian children can look more confident than they feel and so need genuine encouragement and praise from their parents.

Young Aquarians should be encouraged to think logically and practically. Their minds are always working quickly, sometimes too quickly so they often get in a muddle.

Useful Jogger Stroller Accessories

January 20, 2008

There are many useful jogger stroller accessories out on the market today. Whether you are using your jogger stroller out in the hot sun, in the middle of winter or in a highly buggy area you will be able to find jogger stroller accessories to fit almost any situation.

Your child’s skin is very sensitive to the sun’s harmful rays. It is very important to be able to provide UV protection for your little one. You might want to consider purchasing a canopy for your jogger stroller. The canopy has mesh sides, is usually available in several different colors and can be attached to your jogger stroller in seconds.

Adding a basket to your jogger stroller might be a great choice for you if you are constantly carrying extra items and do not have a place to store them. The jogger stroller basket is perfect for carrying those heavy and awkward items that do not fit anywhere else. The basket for the jogger stroller attaches with Velcro and can be put on within seconds.

Bratz Rock Angelz - The Video Game
 by: Jared Winston

MGA Entertainment, the creator of the Bratz toy line, has recently given the nod to the Bratz Rock Angelz video game, which was a rather obvious next step to take when you consider the Bratz exploding popularity. It’s no surprise that countless children have decided to play as the teenage divas right from the comforts of their own home; there aren’t very many games targeted for younger girls, much less one with subject matter with such widespread appeal.

The inevitable release of a Bratz Rock Angelz video game was expected by many Bratz fans worldwide (the Bratz dolls are equally or more popular than Barbie dolls in many countries around the world) since competitors like Barbie have experienced the transition to video games for quite some time. What some parents don’t realize is the Bratz Rock Angelz video game is based upon a DVD movie of the same name, so children can enjoy two forms of media that work in conjunction with each other.

Stroller Safety Tips

January 18, 2008

Strollers offer a wonderful and convenient service to parents and caregivers. The first priority in choosing a stroller should be safety.

To prevent tipping, choose a stroller that has a wide base so even when your child leans over there is no chance of the stroller tipping.

If you purchase a stroller that includes a recliner position check the stroller to make sure the stroller does not fall over backwards when the child reclines.

Remember to use the stroller seat belt at all times.

If your stroller has a basket, use that for purses and bags rather than hanging these items over the handles. The basket on your stroller should be placed over the rear tires.

To prevent accidental folding of the stroller always use the locking device. The brakes are used to limit the rotation of the tires when the stroller is at a complete stop.

Make sure you do not accidentally pinch your child’s fingers when folding or unfolding your stroller. Be conscience of where those little hands are at all times.

If you are using a jogging stroller make sure you use the safety strap that fits around your wrist. This can help prevent the stroller from getting away from you.

How NOT to Motivate Your Children and Students

January 17, 2008

Chaim Ginott was a schoolteacher whose ideas and observations helped to bring about a near revolution in the way teachers interact with their young charges.

He later practiced as a psychologist.

The phone rang, he relates in one of his books, early on a Monday following Thanksgiving weekend. The woman on the line was clearly very agitated.

“Try and figure this out, if you can!” she pleaded.

“There we were in the car, the whole family. We drove four hundred miles, from Pittsburgh to New York. In the back of the car, little Ivan behaved like an angel, quiet and deep in thought..

“I said to myself, ‘He deserves some praise.’

“Just as we entered the Lincoln Tunnel, I turned to him and said: ‘You’re such a good boy, Ivan. I’m proud of you.’

“A minute later, the sky fell on us..

“Ivan pulled out an ashtray and spilled its contents all over us. The ashes, the cigarette butts, and the smoke kept coming, like atomic fallout. We were in the tunnel in heavy traffic, and we were choking. If not for the cars around us, I might have murdered him!

Learn Speak Spanish - That Should Be Your Goal

Learn Speak Spanish - That Should Be Your Goal
 by: Brock M. Hadley

Can you Speak Spanish?

How long have you been studying Spanish? Between high school and college classes and you own efforts you could easily have a couple years already under your belt. During that time you have likely built up a good Spanish vocabulary along with a basic understanding of Spanish verb conjugation, but can you actually speak Spanish?

Why is speaking Spanish so hard?

Can you go up to one of your Spanish speaking neighbors and start a conversation? Can you help a Spanish speaking customer who comes into your store? Why not? Why is it so hard to learn to speak Spanish even after years of study?

Learning Spanish the hard way

Beginning high school and college Spanish classes, as well as most self study Spanish courses start off by teaching vocabulary and verb conjugation. You practice speaking, but the focus is on the individual word or conjugation. Lists of words are memorized and tests are given on verb conjugation. So when it comes time to speak, the words and phrases are separate in your mind. It becomes a matter of trying to pull all the pieces together and form them all into a sensible sentence, which can be hard to do when you are on the spot.

Scolding: One of Communications Tools of Last Resort

January 15, 2008

(Excerpted from Jim Rohn’s 2004 Weekend Leadership Event)

You have to be very careful of scolding. Scolding, as a last resort, may be necessary but you must be very careful. Scolding someone is like giving them a cut, giving them a small cut with your words on the hand. Maybe it will serve its purpose, and the cut will heal and everything will be okay. You needed to get their attention. But you must not do it everyday, all the time.

Some children end up with psychological scars because they have been cut (scolded) everyday. Scold, scold everyday and they wind up psychologically disadvantaged because of that kind of treatment. Because somebody has the words, but words that are cruel; and they use them too often, all the time rather than saving them up as a tool of last resort. They just cut and scold all the time, and kids sometimes have a hard time working out of this because of that kind of environment.

“Too severe, it’s too severe”, we say. In some countries if you steal, they cut off your hand. In our country we’d say, “That’s a bit too severe isn’t it?” But guess what they say, “It is very effective.”
